How the heck do FishTargets work, anyway?
The Walleye is the largest member of the perch family. It is widely available, particularly across the midsection of North America, and is one of our most sought after gamefish. It has always been a table favorite, probably number one on the all-time list.
Walleye are indigenous to the northern States and Canada. They have been successfully introduced to most states. It is most suited to large lakes, and is not often found in rivers or smaller lakes less than 100 acres or so. Characteristically, it is associated with coolwaters, clear or siltfree water, gravel/rubble in which to spawn, and abundant areas greater than 10 feet in depth. Their large distinctive "glass" eyes, sharp teeth and spiny dorsal fin are readily recognizable features that set it apart from other fish. Only the closely related Sauger has any resemblance.
A fast-growing species, if they can get through the first year (1 in 10,000 do), their survival is high and populations therefore are abundant. They are voracious feeders, and generally congregate in larger schools. Where there is one, there are more. Most are caught with "live bait" such as minnows, but artificial lures are also effective.
